Fragile Image
“Who does she think she is?”
It was so quietly spoken, followed by giggles, I wasn't sure she said it out loud. It seemed possible that I just thought it. After all, it wouldn't be the first time I've heard that remark.
I've heard it from the time I was a small girl, all imagination and big dreams. I've heard it from friends, family, even my own parents.
I caught her eye, feeling fragile but giving her a confident smile that would silently let her know:
"I didn't hear a thing, I deserve to be here, you know. I'm worthy."
Today's post is my entry into this week's 100 Word Challenge, hosted by Velvet Verbosity. The 100 Word Challenge is an exercise in which we write exactly 100 words in response to the weekly prompt word. We've all been on a break, and I am feeling very rusty so please be kind!
This week's prompt was "fragile".
I haven't had the experience in many years of people laughing behind my back (now they do it to my face, and I'm laughing as loud as anybody), but it was D-E-V-A-S-T-A-T-I-N-G in childhood. I was so happy when your narrator stood up for herself.
ReplyDeleteIf this is autobiographical, good for you. :) So happy to see you!
